Cooking-HealthyEating
A common search phrase done today is ‘Healthy recipes,’  which would lead one to think there is a growing interest in healthier eating.

Healthy recipes are the ones you already have…with some modifications and substitutions.

In the past several years there has been a change in both attitudes and ideas in what is considered healthy food.

The food pyramid that has been a stable idea and food guide for many years has been modified to reflect changing information in nutrition. Basic information about a calorie being a calorie whether it came from fat or simple carbohydrates or more complex carbohydrates is all changing. As we understand more about the processes of turning food into energy what was once the accepted standard is now changing,
Those food products that are simple carbs (sugars) should be reduced to a minimum.

Changes in flour types from white (highly processed), to whole wheat will provide more fiber and enzymes that slow the absorption of glucose into the blood stream, as well as more healthy and natural nutrients.

Potatoes, white rice, white flour, and sugar are four items that the body expends almost no energy to turn into simple blood sugar. These items have little fiber and in processing many healthy nutrients have been removed. Then, to make products acceptable vitamins and minerals have been added back into them.
These easily digested, soft, bland and calorie rich products should probably be viewed as fat waiting to happen.

To eat healthier some simple changes can be made. Substitute sweet potatoes for white potatoes. This simple change would increase fiber, vitamins, and flavor. Another benefit of a sweet potato is it does not need butter, margarine, or sour cream to be delicious!

Change your choice from processed white rice to brown rice. Brown rice has good flavor and is rich in vitamins and fiber. It is also a good substitute in nearly any recipe that uses rice or in some cases potatoes.

Another item we all eat is pasta, commonly made from white flour. Larger chain stores or health foods stores today have a healthy alternative to regular pasta, that is pasta made with whole-wheat. You can find everything from angel hair spaghetti to lasagna noodles and they all taste great. These items are fiber rich and contain all the original vitamins.

Vegetables are wonderful foods, full of fiber, vitamins and taste. Many can be can be eaten raw which is a bonus, as it requires much more energy to break them down into a usable energy source. When cooking vegetables you can steam, bake or stir fry them without oil. For optimum nutrition don’t over cook.

Fruits are a welcome addition to our diets, generally low in calories and full of vitamins and fiber. They are a satisfying desert or mid day snack.
