River traffic from large ships to tugs pushing barges as well as some high density private boat usage in some areas make knowing the Rules or the Road and river etiquette a must. The upper river is free flowing but is regulated by the dams and this can cause tremendous a rise and fall of the river. This is another condition that can be a safety problem.
This is entire area can be difficult for first timers.
Oregon boaters are required to have the Oregon Boater Education Card. At this time it is all boaters 50 years old and younger are required to have this endorsement on the boat while underway.
The Columbia River is border water between the states of Washington and Oregon - Appropriate fishing licenses are required.

Fishing for White Sturgeon on the Columbia River
...guides - areas - and safety issues.
Sturgeon have become the focus of sport fishing due to their large population. Trophy fishing for the large oversized fish is also another draw. These mature fish can and do reach lengths of 12-14 feet with a substantial portion in the 7 through 10 class. These adult fish are protected from harvest but they provide a thrilling experience for the fishermen that get the opportunity to hook and fight one. Many times sturgeon will make spectacular jumps and impressive line peeling runs, this is what trophy fishing is all about.
There are numerous guides and fishing charters located from the mouth of the Columbia to the various towns upriver from Portland. Most services offer ½ to a full day fishing which will include all bait and tackle. In some cases you can also fish for Sturgeon and Salmon on the same trip.
Basic information on the fish and the river:
The Columbia is the largest river entering the Pacific Ocean in the U.S. This body of water has a huge sport fishery targeted at the White Sturgeon that utilize the river for both food source and spawning ground for the mature fish.
These fish are migratory and spend part of their life in fresh water and then move back and forth between the fresh water and the salt water estuaries. There is some migration between river systems along the coastal rivers.
We also have various populations that are separated by the dams along the length of the river and its main tributary the Snake River. Genetically there is no difference between the fish in the upper Snake River and those fish that are below Bonneville Dam. Sturgeon anglers may also find some great fishing below the various dams.
