Walleye and the Smallmouth Bass, which are non-native fish have steadily grown in popularity with the fishing public. These great eating fish are abundent in many lakes and streams throughout the western states.
Western River systems vary from the Columbia River and its largest tributary the Snake which is the largest system on the west coast to the small coastal streams that may start only a few miles from the Pacific Ocean.
This area has a number of extremely popular species of fish and the numerous rivers and lakes are easily accessed.
The Columbia's major tributary is the Snake River, which is famous for the spectacular Hells Canyon area. Water from this river come form the headwaters of the Rockies, traveling through several states to its confluence with the Columbia at Pasco, Washington.
Small lakes and large impoundments are also part of our water systems and each has something for everyone from quiet solitude to busy and boisterous activities.
The Northwest Also has Steelhead, the large sea going rainbow trout that migrate into many of the coastal rivers and streams. Steelhead also travel up the large major rivers such as the Columbia and Snake River. These two fish species have a huge following; they are almost revered by the anglers.
Chinook Salmon is one of the most well known and possibility the most sought after fish species that populate the west coast. Their spawning runs are common in the major river systems throughout the coastal states.
Trout, panfish, crappie and even the lowly catfish have rewarded millions of people to the excitement and fun that fishing creates. These easily caught and common fish are available in almost any body of water, and provide not only recreation fut some great eating for those who spend time angling.
Fishing is an activity that can be a wonderful family pastime. Children have great fun catching the numerous pan fish...lots of excitement and action will create grand memories for all involved.
