The Snake River has within its length a rugged, spectacular area known as Hells Canyon. This is the deepest river gorge in the United States and much of it lies within the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area. The rugged and wild environment is routinely visited by a number of jet boat tours which provide the public a chance to experience the stark, rugged beauty of this national treasure.

Many Hells Canyon tours originate from the  communities of Lewiston and Clarkston. There are several destinations within the canyon. Some boats travel to Hells Canyon Dam itself while others do a turn around at various historical sites..
Another option provided by some of the companies are tours that provide overnight lodging  in the canyon. This option varies among the different entities. Enquire as to availability.

Tour boats are quite safe and make traveling this rough and rugged area a fun and educational experience.. The larger boats have toilet facilities aboard as well as tops, side curtains as well as heaters for cold weather. This makes the trip comfortable for all riders during all seasons.
There are several smaller companies which also provide tours but on a much smaller scale, numbers can be as low as 6 people per boat to around a dozen depending on the outfitter and their licensing. Due to the reduced occupancy per boat, these can be much more personalized. Most all boats have tops, heaters and side curtains, although most of the smaller boats do not have on board toilet facilities. They do provide stops at sites with facilities every couple of hours to ensure rider comfort.

What to expect:
Activity is restricted on all tour boats due to lack of room and safety issues. There are stops during the tour for rider comfort and to visit specific historical sites.  Comfortable clothing is a must as well as good roomy shoes. A warm coat may be a welcome morning addition even in the summer.
