"appellations". There are six in Washington with Oregon sharing three of the territories.
Washington State’s east side has stepped into a small and exclusive club of regions that can claim production of premium wines.
This eastern section of the state is a fertile, arid region with a growing season that is one key to producing the perfect wine grape. Wine grapes benifit from the long warm summers, rich volcanic soils and a seasonal climatic change that is instrumental in ripening grapes to perfection.
This regional industry is relatively new to the U.S. wine industry but has already made itself well known as a producer of ultra-premium, world class red wines.
These include, Bordeaux, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc as well as a number of other equally note worthy varieties.
For the purpose of this article I picked one of the regions to spotlight, that being the area known as the Walla Walla Appellation. The historic town of Walla Walla, Washington is the regions hub with a number of vineyards and wineries in close proximity.
This small city sits in a valley with the scenic Blue Mountains as its backdrop. The surrounding hills laced with vineyards and agriculture lands finish the quiet beauty of this area.
Walla Walla is a good example of a community keeping the historic and charming feel of the past in their downtown area when so many rural towns have seen their main streets whither and die.
Walla Walla has taken giant steps to retain the past elegance and warmth of their city while embracing the regions developing wine industry. The result is a growing, vibrant and exciting community. Main street is alive with shops, restaurants, art galleries, wineries and wine tasting rooms. Visitors can spend hours just wandering through the tree lined streets and going from shop to shop.
This charming gem with its wineries and rich history has become a great vacation destination. One could spend a day or two or more just visiting the wineries and enjoying the activities that are available in town and the surrounding vicinity.
