Oregon has a number of scenic touring trains. For those who want to experience the nostalgia of simpler times, a ride on one of these tours would the wonderful focus for that mini vacation. This is an activity anyone would enjoy; however, if you are a history buff or Railroad enthusiast it would be an especially thrilling activity.
About all that is left of our passenger railroad system in the West are the special train tours that are provided by various businesses. There has been a great loss of that portion of our past as travel by rail became obsolete. Through these small functioning rail tours we may experience this charming way of travel in a limited scope.

The information below consists of short description of a number of Railroad tours available in Oregon. The list may not include all the tours available but it is a start in rediscovering the past.

Mount Hood Railroad
Scenic tours on Mount Hood Railroad out of Hood River are scheduled from April through December. There are several different types of tours that could provide a fun outing. This is an unusual chance to get a feel for the past when railroad travel was the norm. Reservations should be booked in advanced if you want to be sure to participate in one of the various special excursions.
Hood River is 60 miles East of Portland or you may get there via State Highway on the Mt. Hood Loop.

Sumpter Valley Railroad
If history and old trains are of interest you can also take a tour on the Sumpter Valley Railroad in Baker City.
This is a unique little railroad that was reconstructed in the narrow gage style that was the start of the railroad transportation system. The tour travels from Baker City along 5 miles of mining scarred landscape to the town of Sumpter.
Tours run weekends and holidays from Memorial Day through the end of September

Eagle Cap Excursion Train linking the communities of Elgin, Wallowa, Enterprise and Joseph Oregon. The excursion is 63 miles long running through the scenic Wallowa Valley and along the Grande Ronde River in Northeast Oregon.

Crooked River Dinner Train is an 1800’s western theme train and dinner theatre. Located out of Redmond in Central Oregon. Tour provides a three hour train ride, a four course meal and entertainment.
