Dog Training - Obedience training you puppy or dog
Dog Obedience - training you puppy to be a better companion.

I highly recommend that every dog owner take their pup/dog to obedience classes.  If your new dog is a puppy he can start his schooling at about 4 months when he has received his course of vaccinations and  is safe from picking up any diseases.

The training is as much for the owner as the dog, you will learn how to teach your dog because is much easier to teach than un-teach a bad habit.
Almost every community has a dog club, pet store, or veterinary clinic. Any of these places can provide information on obedience classes in your area.

In the past few years there has been the trend for different approaches in obedience training. You will need to do some research on the type of classes available and choose the type of training method you are comfortable with.

Classes will generally be one lesson a week for 4-6 weeks with you practicing at home what was taught at the class. This is one of those things that you get what you put into it.  If you enjoy the teaching and understand how your buddy learns he will enjoy learning too, and work very hard to please you.

Some of these obedience classes are just for puppies while other classes may be mixed age groups.

I have found that if one puts the pup into a class in the 4-5 month age then another class about 9 – 12 months you will end up with an much better results that just one set of classes.

There are two levels of obedience training - basic and advanced. Basic is just that basic. Dog learns to come when called, heal on a leash, sit and stay, down and stay. They learn to listen to you and pay attention to you…not watching other dogs or people when he is supposed to be paying attention to you.. No barking, no aggression, no jumping…in other words he learns to be a good citizen, with proper manners.

Advanced is much of the same but more fine tuned with longer stays and working off leash for a number of skills. There is also finding and retrieving specific item from a group of similar items, as well as a number of other skills that are done with only hand signals. Advanced obedience training  is a little like dog college.

Over the years I have read a number of training books both on training retrievers and general obedience training and  learned that there are differences in training methods, differences in opinions on how dogs learn and how they should be taught.

I decided this is a situation where each must decide how he or she is going to teach their pet. Every method will work, the main goal is building a good relationship, being consistent and honest with your pet.
To do this you have to learn too but that is the joy of dog training.

There are a number of good training books available today. You can learn something from each one that can make your teaching easier. Get several and then learn more about training you pet.

Personally I have read a number of the popular books on dog training and found these two books very benificial.
