Training the puppy - Socialization.
This part of training a pup is as important as any other skill they will learn throughout their entire lives.
Socialization will allow the pup to grow up without fear of different surroundings, people and other dogs. He will be self confident and relaxed in most any situation.
After bringing home you puppy give him a couple of days to adjust and then you may start taking him out to see the world. He should have his vaccinations started but at this point he has little or no immunity so make sure he is not taken around other dogs that you do not know or has access where other dogs may have been. Good places to go are shopping malls, friend’s houses, parks and school grounds. Make these outings fun and exciting, introduce him to new people of all ages and ethnicity. Very young children may be too rough for the pup at this stage, use common sense here as not to put the puppy into a threatening or scary situation.
About this same time start introducing your puppy to strange things such as a large cardboard in the middle of the floor, or an upside chair. Use your imagination to give the dog new and unusual things in his space. Seeing ‘odd’ things come and go where none had been before will help him adjust to changes in his environment without being spooked.
As soon as Puppy has received all his vaccinations he is ready to really go see the world. It is at this time he will really start developing the attitudes he will have through his life.
My suggestion is get him into a puppy play class right away. It is in this type of environment he will learn how to behave in an acceptable manner and how to play and enjoy the company of other dogs. Socialization begins early and you will need to continue it through the first two years of life to be completely ingrained into the dog.
Be patient with you pup, don’t expect every outing to be the same as the one before it. You may even find he may have an off day and if that happens cut the outting short.
There is another benefit to all this activity, your pup will expend lots of energy in his social excursions which will allow you a bit of extra relaxation time too.
There are specific stages of mental development in dogs which you should be familiar with. Understanding this progression will allow you to make adjustments in you training and activities
